What is the difference between Kitchen Cabinet Painting, Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing, and Kitchen Cabinet Restoration?

What Is Kitchen Cabinet Painting?
Kitchen Cabinet Painting is the process of taking kitchen cabinets that may be the original builder grade golden oak for example and painting them white. That said of course we could paint them any color you want, it wouldn’t matter what color they are now to do that. If the kitchen cabinets are in poor condition and the existing finish is failing it would require stripping the old finish off first. If there are burns, chips, cracks, discoloration, fading, or etc. we will make the necessary repairs to remedy those issues. Once we apply the new paint to your cabinets you shouldn’t be able to tell these issues occurred in natural lighting with the naked eye.
What Is Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing?
Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing is the process of taking kitchen cabinets that are solid wood, stripping the old stain and finish. Then applying a new stain and finish. The main distinction between painting and refinishing is that painting would be done with paint and conceal the grain. Then Refinishing would be done with stain and all of the grain would still be visible in the finished product. We prefer to use solvent based stain as oil based stains fade over time. With stain we also apply a clear vinyl sealer as a primer and clear lacquer as a top coat to protect it. This makes the cabinet refinishing moisture, heat, UV, and scratch resistant. Quality work is the biggest priority for us since we have a 10 year warranty.
What Is Kitchen Cabinet Restoration?
Kitchen Cabinet Restoration is what we do when a customer likes the current look of their stained cabinets but want to restore it to like new condition. So for example you may have 20 year old golden oak cabinets and the stain may have faded and the sealer and top coat may have degraded in some areas. We can come in and restore them to like new condition while maintaining the golden oak look you have come to love. Of course we can restore any look not just golden oak. With restoration we still apply a clear vinyl sealer as a primer and clear lacquer as a top coat to protect the restoration work. This makes the cabinet restoration job we do for you moisture, heat, UV, and scratch resistant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can existing cabinets be refinished instead of replaced?
Yes we can refinish, paint, or restore most cabinets. Rarely have we seen anything that was beyond repair.
How much does cabinet refinishing, painting, or restoration cost?
Well this depends on how big your kitchen is and how many doors and drawers it has. Since cabinet refinishing is more labor intensive than cabinet painting. Then cabinet refinishing or cabinet staining is usually more expensive than cabinet painting. That being said we offer free quotes for all cabinet refinishing, painting, or restoration by email to office@bathrefinishingsolutions.com. Send us some photos along with a count of the doors/drawers and an idea of what you want, then we can email you back a free quote.
How long does cabinet painting, refinishing, or restoration take?
Most kitchen cabinet projects can be completed in three to five days depending on the size and condition of the kitchen.
If my cabinets were painted or refinished before can it be done again?
Absolutely and there is no limit to the number of times that it can be done. If the finish is heavily degraded or failing it will need to be stripped. Stripping cabinets is a service we provide so we’d be happy to help you with that.
Can you refinish or paint laminate cabinets?
If your cabinets aren’t wood we have to use a special chemical to get good adhesion between the surface and the coating we apply. If anybody plans to paint or refinish your laminate cabinets and isn’t using a bonding agent or adhesion promoter run far and fast.
Can you refinish or paint metal cabinets?
Yes we’ve done many metal cabinets, if there is a great deal of rust it is best to sandblast them prior to painting which we can have that done for you if you need it. But of course that is an extra step and cost. We have certain finishes we work with that are designed for metal cabinets as well.
